Scott Ford Survives Sudden Death In Huntington LIPGA Finals
May 1st 2015 - |
HUNTINGTON, LONG ISLAND
Scott Ford, Glen Oaks, defeated Matt Noel, Huntington CC, in 21 holes at the MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship.
The MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship ended in nail-biting fashion at Huntington Country Club. On the 21st hole, Ford finally earned the victory after Noel failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker.
Ford jumped out to an early 1-up lead with a birdie at the first. After trading pars for the next four holes, Noel birdied 6, a hole he had eagled in his quarterfinal match, and 7 to take a 1-up lead. The next seven holes featured steady play and several spectacular recovery shots from both men, but all pars. A match that had showed few fireworks quickly morphed into an exciting affair. After trading birdies on 15, Ford capitalized on Noel’s 3-putt bogey at 16 to square the match. Noel’s ensuing tee shot on 17 ricocheted 50 yards back off a tree before finally settling up against the indoor teaching center on the driving range. He could not recover and Ford carried a 1-up lead to the 18th tee. Ford, who had left several putts one revolution short throughout the day, sent his birdie effort on 18 racing past the hole. His second putt to win the match broke just in front of the hole and his celebration was put on hold.
Ford and Noel traded pars on the first and second playoff hole before the match was finally decided on the 21st hole, the par-3 3rd at Huntington Country Club. After Noel failed to get his ball up-and-down from the greenside bunker, Ford’s two putt par clinched the victory.
Congratulations to Scott Ford on winning the 2015 MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship!
